"The man who chases two rabbits, catches neither" (Confucius)
15-Jan-2009
Many business leaders find it difficult to chase one rabbit. They delude themselves into thinking they can ‘multi-task’ - and try to achieve many things simultaneously.
While they appear busy, they are often unproductive, and create unnecessary work for others. “Busyness” does not necessarily equate to running a good “Business”.
Recent studies have shown that ‘multi-tasking’ actually reduces productivity and impairs the brain’s ability to learn.
You can’t control everything, so focus your time on the few things that really matter - rather than being busy on the many things that don’t. Do less to achieve more.
Here are some key success disciplines from RESULTS.com to drive execution and get the important things done in your firm:
- Focus - if you could only achieve 1 thing this week, what would be the most important thing?
- Weekly team meeting - each person declares their #1 Action Priority for the week
- Be specific – what exactly will you have achieved by the end of the week?
- Make it public - list everyone’s #1 Action Priority for the week up on a whiteboard where everyone in your team can see it. Check it off when it is done
- Schedule uninterrupted time - Peter Drucker recommended setting aside 4 hours of uninterrupted time in your diary per week to work solely on your #1 Action Priority. He believed this discipline was critical to get the important things done
- Use peer pressure – hold each other accountable for achieving your weekly Action Priorities at your subsequent weekly team meeting
