MBWA = Management By Wandering Around
04-Dec-2008
Tom Peters and Bob Waterman coined this term in their 1982 book “In Search of Excellence”
MBWA = Get the hell out of your office! (Tom actually does speak like that)
Information is usually filtered by the time it reaches senior management – so if you really want to make better decisions as a leader, get out and see the raw, unvarnished truth for yourself.
Tear yourself away from the email and spreadsheets, and book time in your weekly schedule to talk “face to face” with your staff and your customers
Here are 2 key success habits we recommend for our fast growth client firms:
1. Everyday - speak to one customer - and ask them the following questions:
- What’s happening in your industry right now?
- What do you hear about our competitors out there?
- What is the most important improvement you’d like to see to make our company better?
2. Every week - take one staff member to lunch - and ask them the following questions:
- What are your key priorities right now? (If they don’t know - be afraid – but that’s a topic for another article)
- What’s going well?
- What frustrates you?
- What is the most important improvement you’d like to see to make our company better?
It sounds so simple doesn’t it? Like many success factors, it is simple - but not necessarily easy.
It takes real discipline and accountability to continually do the “little things” - that cumulatively will create big improvements in your business over time.
So who are you taking for lunch this week?
