Great businesses use STEALTH
24-Jun-2010
As the end of a quarter approaches, effective companies book a meeting to
review and debrief the results of their strategic execution over the last 90
days.
Strategic planning should be an ongoing process - not an annual event.
Effective companies update their strategy every 90 days to ensure relevance
with the competitive environment and to align all staff on the key strategic
actions that need to be implemented in the coming quarter.
If your people are not clear on what the Company’s top 3 strategic priorities
are every quarter - then you are not being effective as a leader. Looking
forward is one thing. You also need to look backwards. You must
review and debrief the reality of your performance every quarter and “bank the
learnings”.
Military leaders use a 7 step debriefing tool to capture the valuable lessons
from their operations – one that has equally valid applications to the business
environment, called S.T.E.A.L.T.H.
S = Set the time
Set a meeting at the end of every quarter to review the execution of quarterly
strategic priorities – both at a company level and an individual level.
T = Tone
The tone of the meeting should be focused on the facts – not opinion or
emotion. Avoid blame and conjecture. Take responsibility for the
truth: What does the data say? What actually occurred? What
is the current reality?
E = Execution
Did we execute our strategic action priorities this quarter? Did we achieve
our goals? Yes? No? To what extent?
A = Analyze
What caused our execution successes? What caused our execution failures?
L = Lessons
What lessons can we take from this?
T = Transfer the lessons
How can we “bank the learnings” to make sure we don’t repeat the same mistakes
in the future? How can we share what worked and did not work - for the
benefit of the whole organization?
H = High note
Finish on a high note. What positives can we take from this?
Do you review and debrief the execution of your strategic priorities at the end
of every quarter?
