One of the crucial roles of a leader is to clearly communicate your vision and strategy
- over and over and over again. They need to be kept visible. They
need to be understood. They need to be absorbed and lived by all of
your people.
However, your ability to execute strategy will be greatly impeded if your people are not fully engaged.
Do you have a highly engaged workforce - who shows up every day
passionate and dedicated, and willing to give you their best efforts?
Depending on which research you look at, on average only 10 - 20% of the
workforce is fully engaged. Less than 1 in 5 people give both their
hearts and minds to the job.
Unfortunately, 60 – 70% of employees do the bare minimum to not get
fired. They are disengaged. They meet the minimum standards that you
hold them accountable for (and that’s the subject of another article),
but really, they are just filling in time to earn a paycheck, and can’t
wait for the weekend (or a better job offer) to come along.
The remaining 10 – 20 % are what we call actively disengaged. They are
actively undermining your success. With these toxic people, you must
“free up their future” as soon as possible.
Your aim as a leader is to foster a fully engaged workforce – one that
is committed to executing your strategy. Increasing employee engagement
has been proven by research to: increase sales, employee productivity,
and customer satisfaction - whilst reducing accidents, absenteeism, and
staff turnover.
The great news is employee engagement can be measured - and improved -
once you identify the right levers to pull. (And you may be surprised
to know, those levers don’t include giving people more money or trying
to make them happier)
Effective companies survey their team members every 6 months using a
simple, replicable process. They use the findings from each survey to
create a prioritized set of actions to improve employee engagement and
ultimately their business execution.
How engaged is your workforce? Do you even know? Do you know what steps you need to take to improve it?
